Under God’s Umbrella

In Ladies Group the other night, we were talking about God’s blessings.  I read a statement from our devotional that said, “You can’t abandon the principles of God and walk in the blessings of God.”  I love this!  And God showed me an illustration that really helped the girls see it, in their own minds.

Picture this, God is standing beside you with an umbrella.  Now, it’s not one of those little compact umbrellas that flip up with the wind comes and you still get soaked.  No, it’s a giant golf umbrella, big and sturdy and as you walk along the way with him, his umbrella protects you from the storm.  Oh, your feet might still get a little wet, but the rain and hail bounce safely off of you.

But many times, we walk away from God.  We go our own way, and as a result, walk away from his protection, his blessings.  God didn’t leave us, we left him.

And when the storms come, we get wet.  And then we blame God.  But he didn’t go anywhere.  He is still standing at that intersection, where we left him, with his umbrella, waiting for us to come back.

So my friends, if you are feeling a bit soaked today … stop look around.

Did you walk away from God?

But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.  Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.    – Psalm 5:11

Father, thank you for your umbrella of protection and blessings that is freely given to all who seek you.

I love you Jesus.
In your name I pray.
Amen

Thanksgiving Baskets

The Tree of Life Church donated 50 Baskets of Thanksgiving dinner food and 50 turkeys to friends and family of church members for Thanksgiving Dinner.  We ended up giving out 53 baskets of food and 57 turkeys.  It was a great partnership between Harry Chapin, and the members of The Tree of Life Church.

The Golden Rule

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12

We’ve all heard this mantra.  Most of us learned it in Kindergarten or earlier.  Be nice to others.  Treat them as you want to be treated.  Sounds simple enough.  And it was fairly easy to follow when we were kids.  We took turns on the swing on the playground.  We shared our cookies at snack time.  We let someone else go in front of us at the water fountain.

And then we grew up and life became all about making ourselves happy, and somewhere along the way we forgot this simple teaching.

Jesus spoke these words to his followers, it was his instructions to them while he was doing his famous teaching, The Sermon on the Mount.  He gave them many examples of how to walk this out, then summed it all up by this statement, So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

He didn’t mean that they were to toss the laws of the day into the trash can, but simply, if we treat others the way we want to be treated, we would be living life the way we should live it.  We’d be doing the right things.

Wonder what would happen if I thought of others before myself?  If I treated people the way I wanted to be treated?

Maybe they’d see Jesus through me??

Father, help me to love others  as you love them, to see them as you see them, to treat them as I would want to be treated.  Help me Jesus to be better inside.  Help me Jesus to truly follow you … not in word, but in deed.  And Jesus, when I mess up, forgive me.  Help me learn from my mistakes.

I love you Jesus!
In Your Name I Pray,
Amen

God’s Blessings Upon You!

Are You Hungry For God?

Earlier today I was listening to a song by Michael W. Smith. When the song ended, he asked, “Are you hungry for God?” In Matthew, I was reading about the day Jesus climbed up on a hillside with his disciples, those who were committed to him, and he explained to them how to live out this new life that they were a part of. The beginning of his message explains who is going to be blessed. Matthew 5:6 states,

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Being blessed is such a special concept. It’s much more than just being happy. Happiness comes and goes, like the wind, but being blessed is contentment, inside. That sticks with us, regardless of the situations around us. God stands for righteousness, God is righteousness. So basically, Jesus was telling his followers, if you hunger and thirst for God, you are blessed and you will be filled.

We are going to be filled with something. We have a choice. It’s either the things of the world … or the things of God. Whichever we feed on.

I want to fill myself with God.

Father, I do want to hunger and thirst for you. I know, so many times when my spirit is dry, it’s because I’ve let the world fill me up. Lord, help me to make the right choices. To always choose you and your ways.

I Love You Jesus.
In Your Name I Pray,
Amen

God Bless You!
